Acupuncture in the Prevention of "Artificial Abortion Syndrome" in Heart Disease Patients
"Artificial abortion syndrome" denotes a series of clinical manifestation of vagotonic eactions which were induced by local excitation of the uterine cervix and the uterine wall by instruments or by the negative pressure during the process of artificial abortion. In normal cases
recovery usually takes place within 5-10 minutes after the operation. However
if the pregnant women were victims of some forms of cardio-vascular disorders
such reactions would liable to result in sudden cardiac arrest and
once it should happen
the resuscitation measures would less likely be successful. The life of the patients might be threatened if emergency measure was not taken promptly. In an attempt to prevent such accident
from Apr. 1977-Nov. 1978
prophylactic measure was taken with acupuncture analgesia during the operations on 100 cases of such patients and the results were found favorable. In cases of pregnancy less than 80 days "Zhongji" point was chosen
while in cases of pregnancy more than 80 days
"Guanyuan" point was selected. During the operation one should twist the needle consistently
and avoid pulling out the needle too early. From July-Oct. 1977
abortions were performed on 263 normal cases without acupuncture
the incidence of "artificial abortion syndrome" was 12.5%
while in 100 cases with cardio-vascular disorders to whom acupuncture was used as a prophylactic measure of the reactions
the incidence was only 3%. The difference between these two series was statistically significant (X

all of these 100 cases with cardiovascular disorders got through the operation successfully without receiving any other adjunctive treatments.
