Comparative Analysis of EEG Integral Values Between "Chi-Kong" (Traditional Breathing-Exercise) and Nonbreathing Exercise Groups
Breathing-exercise is an effective Chinese traditional method for promoting health. It has been confirmed by repeated clinical observations of past 20 years in stabilizing blood pressure and maintaining the effectiveness of the therapy. There is an evidence by experimental studies that the breathingexercise with "consciousness" in full play may play an active role in regulation and control of body multiple functions. This paper shows the comparison of EEG integral values of the hypertensives before and after doing breathing-exercises using the recordings of EEG integral values. An non-breathing-exercises group is taken as a control group
of which the changes of EEG integral values before and after rest with closed eyes are observed. In the group of doing breathing-exercises (42 cases)
the integral values of a wave in central and occipital area increase respectively by 73.8 % and 61.9 %
in some of those patients
the increase of integral values of θ and δ wave can be observed. Whereas no marked changes in the control group (40 cases) before and after rest with "closed eyes" are seen. There is a statistically significant differance between two groups (P < 0.01).The changes of EEG waves can reflect those of cerebral functiorf. In "silence" period of breathing-exercise
there is an elevation of a waves occasionally with increase of θ、δ waves. This indicates that "self-training" guided by "consciousnes" in doing breathing-exercise may help to regulate the disturbance of the nervous system and to enhance the body’s capacity against hypertensive disease.
