Grand Mal Seizure Treated with“Qingyangsen”(Root of Cynanchum otophyllum Schneid)and an Experimental Observation on Animals
Abstract
32 cases of grand mal seizure were pla-ced under clinical observation. In spite ofadequate treatment with antiepileptic drugs
the occurrence of seizures is at least 4 timesin the previous month in each case.32 caseswere treated then
in addition to the orig-inal medication with Qingyangsen(Root ofCynanchum otophyllum Schneid.).After acourse treatment of 2-9 months
seizureswere fundamentally controlled in 9 cases. The reduction of seizure frequency in 20cases had been more than 50%
while thatin the other 3 cases
it had been less than50%.None became worse. No side effectwere observed during the course of treat-ment.Discussion on the dosage
route of admi-nistration and factors influencing the effi-cacy were given. The anticonvulsant activity of Qingyang-sen were examined by the“kindling”testin kindled rat models
comparing with theefficacy of phenobarbital. It was revealedthat Qingyangsen had anticonvulsant effecton experimental models of epilepsy.
