Objective To observe the influence of Shenqi Compound Extract （Compound extract of Ginseng and Astragalus membranaceus） on GK rats with diabetes mellitus macroangiopathy and its mechanism.Methods Eighteen Wistar rats were included in the control group

while the 73 GK rats were randomized into four groups:18 ones in the GK group

19 in the model group

18 in the atorvastatin group

and 18 in the Shenqi Compound Extract group.The model group

the atorvastatin group

and the Shenqi Compound Extract group were made models with the L-arginine methyl ester （L-NAME） 0.1mg/（ml·d） of endothelial nitric oxide synthase （eNOS） added in the drinking water for 35 days.At the same time of modeling

the drugs were administered.The morphological changes

the level of serum C-reactive protein （CRP）

and the changes in the expressions of PI3-KP85a and Akt mRNA of abdominal aorta were observed.Results The Shenqi Compound Extract could relieve atherosclerosis of rat models

decrease the serum CRP （P<0.05）.The expression of PI3-KP85a mRNA in the Shenqi Compound Extract group was lower than that of the model group

but without significance.Compared with model group

the expression of Akt mRNA of wall of abdominal aorta in the Shenqi Compound Extract group was significantly decreased （P<0.01）.Conclusion Shenqi Compound Extract can effectively prevent the development of diabetes mellitus macroangiopathy

with a possible molecular mechanism relating with the inhibition of Akt mRNA expression in the aorta wall and PI3-K/Akt signal transduction of GK rats with diabetes mellitus macroangiopathy.
