Objective To observe the effect of Qingwei San （Powder for clearing stomach） plus Yun Jian （Gypsum decoction） on chronic periodontitis of adult patients. Methods Sixty chronic periodontitis patients were randomized into treatment group and control group with 30 in each. The control group was treated with metronidazole （0.2g each time

twice a day） and levofloxacin （0.2g each time

twice a day） for oral taking

on base of which

the treatment group was administered Qingwei San plus Yun Jian

for two months. After treatment

the gingival index （GI）

pocket depth （PD）

plaque index （PLI）

and sulcus bleeding index （SBI） of both groups and the clinical effect were observed. Results In the treatment group

the total effective rate was 86.67%

significantly higher than 67.67% in the control group （P<0.05）. After treatment

and PLI of both groups were decreased

and the decrease in the treatment group was more significant than that in the control group （P<0.05）. Conclusion Qingwei San plus Yun Jian can more effectively control the inflammation of periodontal tissues and improve the clinical symptoms of chronic periodontitis.
