Effect of Xiaochuan Acupoint Adhesive Plaster on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases in Stable Stage: A Clinical Study on 64 Cases
Objective To evaluate the clinical effect and safety of winter disease summer treatment therapy with the application of Xiaochuan Acupoint Adhesive Plaster (Plaster applied at acupoints for stopping asthma) on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in stable stage. Methods Totally 142 COPD patients in stable stage were randomized into treatment group and control group with 71 in each. They were treated with the application of Xiaochuan Plaster and placebo plaster respectively
3 times one year
2 years in succession. The changes in St George’s respiratory questionnaire (SGRQ) score
BODE index. The annual average times of common cold and asthma acute aggravation
times of emergency consultation and hospitalization
pulmonary function
and adverse reaction of skin were observed. Results Of the treatment group
the comparison of one-year treatment and two-year treatment with before treatment showed a decrease in the total score of SGRQ and scores of symptoms
activities
and influences (P<0.05)
except that there was no statistical difference in symptoms
there was statistical difference in the decrease of scores of activities and influences and total score of two-year treatment in comparing with one-year treatment and the control group in the corresponding period (P<0.05). The treatment group was better than the control group. Comparing with before treatment and one-year treatment
the decreased value of BODE index in two-year treatment of the treatment group was more than that of the control group in the corresponding period (P<0.01). Of the control group
the ratio of the forced expiratory volume at the 1st second (FEV1) and forced volume capacity (FVC) was improved in two-year treatment as compared with before treatment and one-year treatment (P<0.05)
however
there was no statistical difference compared with the treatment group in the corresponding period (P>0.05). The FEV1/FVC was decreased in one-year treatment of the treatment group in comparing with before treatment (P<0.05). The FEV1% in two-year treatment of the treatment group was increased
but there was no statistical difference in the comparison with before treatment and the control group in the corresponding period (P>0.05). In the two-year treatment of the treatment group
the annual average times of common cold and asthma acute aggravation were significantly less than those of the control group in the corresponding period
and less than before treatment and one-year treatment of its own (P<0.05)
and the times of emergency consultation and hospitalization were less than before treatment and those of the control group in the corresponding period (P<0.05). In the duration of two-year treatment
there was no strong adverse reaction of skin in the treated areas in both groups. The comparison of the two groups showed no statistical difference between them (P>0.05). Conclusion Application of Xiaochuan Acupoint Adhesive Plaster is effective in improving the life quality of COPD patients in stable stage
reducing the acute aggravation of asthma. And it’s safe in clinical treatment.
