Objective To observe the influence of Chaihu Shugan Mingmu Pill [Pill containing Chaihu（Radix Bupleuri） for soothing the liver and improving eyesight] on the visual evoked potential of the patients with traumatic optic atrophy in the TCM syndrome of liver qi stagnation and kidney deficiency.Methods A total of 60 cases were randomized into a treatment group and a control group with 30 in each.The treatment group was administered Chaihu Shugan Mingmu Pill

while the control group was given mecobalamin tablet

for 60 days.Scores of symptoms before and after treatment

the changes of vision and flash visual evoked potential（F-VEP） of patients were observed.Results In the treatment group

the total effective rate was 90.00%

while in the control group

it was 43.33%.The treatment group was better than the control group（P<0.01）.The vision in both groups were improved（P<0.05 and P<0.01）

and there was a significant difference in the comparison of the treatment group with the control group（P<0.05）.The treatment group was better than the control group.The duration of F-VEP-P2 of the two groups after treatment was significantly shortened than before treatment（all P<0.01）

the difference between the two groups after treatment was statistically significant（P<0.05）

and the duration of F-VEP-P2 of the treatment group was more shortened than that of the control group.The amplitude of F-VEP-P2 in both groups after treatment was significantly increased（P<0.05 or P<0.01） in comparing with before treatment

however

there was no statistical difference between the two groups after treatment（P>0.05）.Conclusion In the treatment of traumatic optic atrophy

Chaihu Shugan Mingmu Pill is effective in shortening the incubation period of F-VEP-P2 and increasing its amplitude

therefore the conduction of optic nerve is improved and the vision of patient is restored.
