Effect of Buzhong Yiqi Decoction on the Intestinal Absorption Function in Short Bowel Syndrome
Objective To observe the effect of Buzhong Yiqi Decoction(Center-Supplementing Qi-Boosting Decoction) on the intestinal absorption function in short bowel syndrome(SBS) patients. Methods Thirty-two SBS patients were randomized into the Chinese medicine group and control group
with 16 in each. Both groups were given basic treatment and Buzhong Yiqi Decoction was added in the Chinese medicine group. The diarrhea scores and levels of serum citrulline were detected before treatment and 3 weeks after treatment. Results The differences in diarrhea scores and levels of serum citrulline were statistically significant between before and after treatment in both groups(P<0.05 or P<0.01)
and the differences between groups after treatment were statistically significant as well(P<0.05).After treatment
the intestinal absorption function improved in both groups
especially in the Chinese medicine group. Conclusion The basic treatment for SBS could alleviate the disease and the combination of Buzhong Yiqi Decoction could increase the residual intestinal absorption function and relieve diarrhea.
