Effects of Tuiyi Mingmu Decoction on Basal Tear Secretion and Tear Film Stability After Pterygium Excision
Objective To observe the effects of Tuiyi Mingmu Decoction( screens-abating and eyes-brightening decoction) on basal tear secretion and tear film stability after pterygium excision and discuss its relationship with pterygium recurrence. Methods Sixty cases( 84 eyes) of pterygium were randomized into the treatment group and control group
with 30 cases( 41 eyes) and 30 cases( 43 eyes) in each. Both groups were given pterygium excision. The treatment group was given Tuiyi Mingmu Decoction after pterygium excision. The dry eye symptom scores
Schirmer-I test and tear film break-up time( BUT) were observed in the 2nd week and 4th week after pterygium excision in both groups. The recurrence rate of pterygium within 12 months was observed. Results The corneal wound was smooth and flat and the grafts without significant edema
cloudy
infection or rejection after pterygium excision in both groups. The dry eye symptom scores were significantly increased in both groups 2 weeks after pterygium excision( P <0.05 or P <0.01)
but significantly decreased 4 weeks after pterygium excision( P <0.05 or P <0.01).The results of Schirmer-I test were significantly increased in the treatment group 2 weeks and 4 weeks after pterygium excision( P < 0.01).There was no significant difference between before and after pterygium excision in Schirmer-I test in the control group( P > 0.05).The BUT was significantly increased in both groups 2 weeks and 4 weeks after pterygium excision( P < 0.05 or P < 0.01).The treatment group was superior to the control group in dry eye symptom scores
Schirmer-I test and BUT 2 weeks and 4 weeks after pterygium excision( P < 0.05 or P < 0.01).There were29 cases( 40 eyes) were followed up in the treatment group and 40 eyes recovered. There were 28 cases( 40 eyes)were followed up in the control group
and 34 eyes recovered and 6 eyes relapsed with a recurrence rate of 15.00%.There was a significant difference between groups in the recurrence rate( P < 0.05).Conclusion Tuiyi Mingmu Decoction can relieve dry eye symptoms
promote basal tear secretion
improve tear film stability and reduce recurrence rate after pterygium excision.
