Clinical Observation on 103 Cases of Vascular Dementia Adopting Combined Treatment of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapy with Western Medicine
Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of integrated traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) therapy in the treatment of vascular dementia. Methods A multi-center
randomized controlled trial was adopted. Totally218 patients were divided into treatment group with 110 patients and control group with 108 patients. Basic internal treatments were applied on both groups. At the mean time
integrated TCM therapy including syndrome differentiation treatments of TCM
acupuncture
rehabilitation
nursing was carried out on the treatment group; while the control group took donepezil hydrochloride orally
5 mg per day and added to 10 mg after 4 weeks with same rehabilitation and nursing as the treatment group. Both groups underwent treatments for 2 months. Mini-Mental Status Examination( MMSE) was used to evaluate cognitive functions
and Blessed Behavior Score( BBS) was used to evaluate behavior ability. Assessment of clinical efficacy was made after treatments. Results Total effective rate of cognitive function was 68. 93%
and 57. 00% in the treatment group and the control group respectively. Total effective rate of behavior ability was 70. 87%
and 61. 00% in the treatment group and the control group respectively. Both groups indicated evident improvements on the scores of cognitive function and behavior ability( P < 0. 05 or P < 0. 01) and efficacy of the treatment group is superior to that of the control group( P < 0. 05 or P < 0. 01). Conclusion Integrated traditional Chinese medicine therapy can significantly improve the cognitive function and behavior ability of patients.
