The Feasibility of the Herbalization of Western Medicine: Taking Aspirin as an Example
Aspirin as an antipyretic analgesic has a long history
but also is the first-choice in treating acute rheumatic fever and inhibiting platelet aggregation. Analyzing aspirin based on herb property theory in traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) could propose that aspirin has a cold property with the taste of sour and bitter
and belongs to lung
liver
kidney
and spleen meridians. According to the theory of classifying medicinal by its natural features
aspirin can be categorized into ‘wind-related medicinal’. Its effects vary with different dosage and meridian distribution
which means small dose can expel heat with its coolness
while large dose can eliminate dampness to relieve pain. It also has the feature of ‘dynamic herbs’ with the effect of promoting blood circulation to remove meridian obstruction.Based on above
aspirin as ‘wind-related medicinal’is applicable to multiple systems and diseases
and it is an‘herb’with complex properties and numerous effects.
