The Impact of Periocular Massage and Acupoint Application of Chinese Medicine on the Accommodative Function of Adolescent Patients with Low Myopia and Asthenopia
Objective To observe the impact of periocular massage and acupoint application of Chinese medicine on the accommodative function of adolescent patients with nearwork-induced low myopia and asthenopia. Methods In total 82 adolescent patients with nearwork-induced low myopia and asthenopia were randomly divided into 2-week treatment group( n = 28)
4-week treatment group( n = 29) and control group( n = 25). Both treatment groups were conducted with periocular massage and acupoint application for 2 and 4 weeks respectively
while the control group was applied with the Esculin and Digitalis Glycosides Eye Drops for 4 weeks. The scores of asthenopia symptoms and accommodative function were assessed before treatments
2 weeks and 4 weeks after treatments. Results After the treatments
the scores of asthenopia symptoms in all groups were significantly improved( P < 0. 01) but there was no significant difference among the results of each group( P = 0. 615)
and the accommodative function
amplitude of accommodation
accommodative facility
accommodative lag
and negative relative adjustment( NRA) / positive relative adjustment( PRA) were significantly improved in each group( P < 0. 01). Moreover
the 4-week treatment group had the best results in the accommodative facility and accommodative lag( P < 0. 05). Conclusion Compared with the Esculin and Digitalis Glycosides Eye Drops
periocular massage and acupoint application of Chinese medicine could make more improvements on the accommodative facility
