Baimai Ointment (白脉软膏) Combined with Carbamazepine Tablets in the Treatment of Primary Trigeminal Neuralgia,Clinical observation on 40 Cases
Objective To observe the clinical efficacy and safety of Baimai Ointment combined with Carbamazepine tablets in the treatment of primary trigeminal neuralgia. Methods 78 cases of primary trigeminal neuralgia were randomly divided into experimental group with 40 cases and control group with 38 cases. The two groups were given 400 mg of Carbamazepine tablets at the first time
2 times a day. If the treatment effect is poor after one week
daily administration will increase to 200 mg each time
three times a day
until the pain passes or reach the maximum daily dose of 800 mg. The experimental group were treated together with Baimai Ointment by smearing 1 g of ointment evenly on the ipsilateral skin each time
3 times a day. Both two groups were treated for 4 weeks. Pain scores were recorded using visual analog score( VAS) before treatment and 1
2
and 4 weeks after treatment. Quality of life was scored before treatment and at the end of the 4-week treatment. The tolerance and adverse reaction incidence of Carbamazepine tablets in the two groups was observed. Results The total effective rate was 87. 5% in the experimental group and 68. 4% in the control group
with a significant difference between the two groups( P < 0. 05). After treatment for 1
2
or 4 weeks
the VAS scores in both two groups were significantly decreased( P < 0. 05)
especially in experimental group at week 2 and week 4( p < 0. 05). After treatment for 4 weeks
quality of life score were significantly increased in the both groups( P < 0. 05)
especially in the experimental group( P < 0. 05). After 4 weeks of treatment
the usage of Carbamazepine tablets was( 452 + 154) mg / d in the experimental group and( 561 +139) mg / d in the control group
with no significant difference between the two groups( P > 0. 05). There were no serious adverse reactions in both groups. Conclusion In the treatment of primary trigeminal neuralgia
the Baimai Ointment combined with Carbamazepine tablets can significantly relieve pain and improve quality of life with good safety. It shows a better curative effect than use of Carbamazepine tablets alone.
