Objective To examine the clinical effect of Zishen Shengjin Buccal Tablet（ 滋肾生津口含片） treating xerostomia of maintenance hemodialysis patients. Methods Forty-eight maintenance hemodialysis patients with xerostomia were randomized into a high dose group

a low dose group and a control group

16 cases in each group.The high dose group was given Zishen Shengjin Buccal Tablet 6- 10 tablets every day（ 1. 32 g herbs in each tablet）.The low dose group was given 3- 5 tablets every day. The control group was not given pastille. The high and low dose groups were treated for 4 weeks. The level of mouth dryness and dialysis dehydration volume of patients in each group were evaluated before treatment

at the 1st

2nd

3rd and 4th week of treatment. Results Since the 2nd week of treatment

the difference of the level of mouth dryness scores in each group was significant

and scores of both treated groups were lower than those of the control group（ P < 0. 05）. Analysis of covariance was carried out by dialysis years. After treatment

the difference between the control group [（ 33. 01 ± 3. 43） scores]and the low [（ 17. 24 ±3. 62） scores]and high[（ 19. 45 ± 3. 43） scores]dose groups was significant（ P < 0. 05）. The difference of dialysis dehydration volume in each group between each week of treatment and before treatment

as well in all groups at the same time was not significant（ P > 0. 05）. Conclusion Zishen Shengjin Buccal Tablet might have significant short effect on the level of mouth dryness of maintenance hemodialysis patients with xerostomia

while it might have little effect on patients’ dialysis dehydration volume.
