Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Zhuang nationality medicine Gufa Meiran Decoction（ 固发美髯汤） in treating liver and kidney deficiency type of recurrent alopecia areata. Methods Seventy patients with liver and kidney deficiency type of recurrent alopecia areata were divided into the treatment group and the control group

with 35 cases in each. The treatment group was given Gufa Meiran Decoction

one dose a day; the control group was given Liuwei Dihuang Wan（ 六味地黄丸）

eight pills each time

three times a day. Both two groups were treated for 12 weeks. Hair loss area score and onset time of patients in the two groups were observed before and after treatment

and the clinical curative effect and recurrence rate were evaluated. The adverse reactions in the two groups during the treatment were recorded. Results The total effective rate was 91. 43% in the treatment group

and 74. 29% in the control group

the treatment group was better than the control group P < 0. 05). After treatment

the scores of the hair loss area in the two groups after treatment were significantly lower than those before treatment（ P < 0. 01）

and the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group（ P < 0. 01）. The onset time in the treatment group was significantly shorter than that in the control group（ P < 0. 01）. In the treatment group

12 cases were cured

and with no recurrence; In the control group

5 cases were cured

3 cases relapsed

and the recurrence rate in control group was higher than that in treatment group（ P < 0. 05）. In the treatment group

there were one case with mild abdominal distension and diarrhea. Conclusion Zhuang nationality medicine Gufa Meiran Decoction seems to have good curative effect
