Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of Wenyang Fuyuan Formula（ 温阳复元方） in the treatment of convalescent ischemic stroke. Methods Two hundred and thirty patients with convalescent ischemic stroke from 3 hospitals were divided into a treatment group and a control group

with 115 cases in each group. Basic treatment of western medicine was given to both groups. In addition to the western medicine basic treatment

the treatment group was given Wenyang Fuyuan Formula

and the control group was given Buyang Huanwu Decoction（ 补阳还五汤）

both orally

one dose daily. After treating for 28 days

clinical efficacy in the two groups was observed. Neurologic impairment score

ability of daily life score and total score of Chinese medicine main symptoms were observed in the two groups before and after treatment. Results There were 109 patients in the treatment group and 106 patients in the control group who finished the study. The total effective rate was 90. 8% in the treatment group and 76. 4%in the control group. The total effective rate in the treatment group was higher than that in the control group（ P <0. 05）. After treatment

the neurologic impairment score and the total score of Chinese medicine main symptoms in the two groups were both significantly decreased

and the ability of daily life score in the two groups was significantly increased（ P < 0. 05 or P < 0. 01）. After treatment

the neurologic impairment score and the total score of Chinese medicine main symptoms in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group

and the ability of daily life score in treatment group was significantly higher than that in control group（ P < 0. 05）. Conclusion Wenyang Fuyuan Formula shows a good clinical efficacy for convalescent ischemic stroke patients. It could relieve clinical symptoms and improve neurologic function. The clinical efficacy of Wenyang Fuyuan Formula seems better than Buyang Huanwu Decoction.
