Objective To observe the effect of Toutongning Capsule（ 头痛宁胶囊） on cerebral blood flow and quality of life in elderly patients with tension headache of phlegm and stasis obstructing collaterals type. Methods Totally 102 patients were randomized into control group and observation group

51 cases each. The control group received oral flunarizine capsules

5 mg each time

once a day. The observation group received Toutongning Capsule

1. 2 g each time

3 times a day. Both groups were treated for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment

the degree of headache was evaluated by VAS score

and the number and duration of episodes were recorded. Cerebral hemodynamics were measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasound

including posterior cerebral artery（ PCA）

middle artery（ MCA）

and anterior artery（ ACA）. The mean blood flow velocity（ MFV） of the vertebral artery（ VA） and basilar artery（ BA） was evaluated using the SF-36 scale and adverse reactions were recorded. Results Compared with those before treatment

the VAS score and the number of episodes of headache reduced and the duration was shortened after treatment in both groups

and the MFV of PCA

VA

and BA in the posterior circulation increased（ P < 0. 05）.Except for emotional functions

the remaining dimensions of the SF-36 scale improved after treatment in both groups

and the overall health and vitality of the observation group improved better than those of the control group（ P <0. 05）. The incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group was 2. 0%

significantly lower than that in the control group（ 13. 7%）（ P < 0. 05）. Conclusion Toutongning Capsule in the treatment of elderly patients with tension headache of phlegm and stasis obstructing collaterals type can improve the patient’s posterior circulation cerebral blood flow and quality of life.
