Discussion on the Form and Meaning of “Phlegm” in Traditional Chinese Medicine
"Phlegm"is a complicated concept in traditional Chinese medicine( TCM). It is of great significance for us to grasp the form and meaning of "phlegm"for clinical syndrome differentiation. The form of phlegm can be divided into "tangible"and "invisible". The meaning of phlegm is the connotative meaning
which refers to the rich connotation of different pathogenesis as the pathological products and pathogenic factors from the relationship between phlegm and fluid
water
qi
blood
zang-fu viscera
and disease. This paper discussed the tangible and intangible connotation of phlegm to promote the understanding of phlegm in TCM
so as to provide references from clinical syndrome differentiation of related diseases.
