Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effects of moxibustion for benefiting the lung on quality of life( QOL) and efficacy satisfaction for stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease( COPD). Methods A multicenter
randomized
controlled trial was designed to study the patients with stable COPD who were admitted to four hospitals. A total of 192 subjects were randomly divided into a test group and a control group by center random method
with 96 patients in each group. Patients in both groups were treated with western medicine routine treatment and the test group was treated with moxibustion for benefiting the lung at the same time. The test group patients were treated for 15 days as one treatment course for 3 months
and were followed up for 12 months. QOL of COPD assessment test( CAT)
COPD patient report outcome scale( COPD-PRO) and efficacy satisfaction questionnaire of COPD( ESQ-COPD) were evaluated at 1
2
and 3 months of treatment and at 3
6
9
and 12 months of follow-up. Results Totally 37 cases were dropped out of the study
76 cases completed in the test group and 79 cases in the control group. There were statistically significant differences at different time points of CAT( F = 4. 413
P = 0. 037). There were significant difference between groups at different time points of repeated measurement for clinical symptoms field( F = 4. 257
P = 0. 041)
health satisfaction field( F = 5. 531
P = 0. 020)
efficacy satisfaction field( F = 9. 186
P = 0. 003)and total score( F = 6. 563
P = 0. 011) of PRO. There were significant difference between groups at different time points of repeated measurement for work and life field( F = 4. 012
P = 0. 047)
clinical symptoms field( F =13. 811
P < 0. 001)
therapeutic effects field( F = 10. 120
P = 0. 002)
convenience of treatment field( F =4. 180
P = 0. 043)
overall efficacy field( F = 17. 519
P < 0. 001) and total score( F = 14. 980
P < 0. 001) for ESQ. Conclusion Moxibustion for benefiting the lung was significantly effective for patients with stable COPD and could improve QOL and improve the efficacy satisfaction.
