A Stratified Randomized Controlled Study on the Intervention of Traditional Chinese Medicine Comprehensive Therapy in Adolescents with Simple Myopia
Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effects of comprehensive traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) therapy on the progression of simple myopia in adolescents. Methods A stratified random grouping was used
287 eyes of 156 adolescents with simple myopia were divided into two levels
<
-1.00 DS(less than 100 degrees of myopia) and-1.00 DS to-3.000 DS based on the one with higher myopic refractive power myopia 100-300 degrees)
and then were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group. There were 78 cases(141 eyes) in the treatment group and 78 cases(146 eyes) in the control group. The control group was given health education and routine glasses(
<
-1.00 DS without glasses
-1.00 DS--3.000 DS with glasses); on the basis of the control group
the treatment group was given TCM comprehensive therapy including auricular application
plum blossom needle tapping
acupoint application of drugs and pulses electric stimulation
all for twice a week
1 month as 1 course of treatment. Both groups were observed for 3 courses of treatment. The naked eye vision
refractive power
corneal curvature
eye axis
positive and negative relative adjustment
adjustment amplitude and adjustment sensitivity of the 2 groups of patients at different levels and progress were compared before and after intervention. Results 1)Comparison between groups of patients with
<
-1.00 DS before and after intervention: compared with the group before intervention
the naked eyes′ vision decreased
the refractive power increased
and the eye axis increased after intervention in both groups. The adjustment sensitivity of the treatment group improved(P
<
0.05 or P
<
0.01). After treatment
the naked eye vision of the treatment group was higher than that of the control group
and the refractive power was lower than that of the control group(P
<
0.05 or P
<
0.01); 33 eyes of the treatment group progressed with a rate of 75.00%; 42 eyes in the control group progressed with a progress rate of 93.33%. The difference in the progress rates between groups was statistically significant(χ
2
=4.343
P=0.037). 2)Comparison between groups of patients with-1.00 DS--3.00 DS before and after intervention: compared with the group of patients before intervention
both groups′ naked eyesight decreased
refractive power increased
eye axis growth and adjustment sensitivity were improved after intervention(P
<
0.01); in the treatment group
the visual acuity of the naked eye after intervention was higher than that of the control group
and the refractive power was lower than that of the control group(P
<
0.05); the treatment group progressed in 56 eyes
with a progress rate of 57.73%; the control group progressed in 73 eyes
with a progress rate of 72.27%. The difference in progression rate between groups was statistically significant(χ
2
= 4.611
P= 0.032). Conclusion Comprehensive TCM therapy can alleviate the progress of adolescent simple myopia and improve the regulatory function.
