Electroacupuncture versus Pelvic Floor Muscle Training for Treatment of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence:A Multipul-Centered, Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective To compare the effect of electroacupuncture versus pelvic floor muscle training for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence(SUI). Methods In this multicenter randomized controlled trial
296 females with SUI were randomly divided into treatment group(149 patients) and control group(147 patients) by the central random system. The treatment group was given continuous wave electroacupuncture with frequency 50 Hz
current intensity 1-5 mA gradually increasing to patients′ tolerance limit at Zhongliao(BL 33)(bilateral) and Huiyang(BL 35)(bilateral)
50-60 mm depth for oblique insertion. The control group received pelvic floor muscle training. Both groups were treated three times a week for 8 weeks
and were followed up to 32 weeks. The outcomes included reduced frequency of 24-hour urinary incontinence
the changes in the degree of urinary leakage
the reduced amount of urine leakage
the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form(ICIQ-SF) score
and adverse events. Results After eight weeks of treatment
there was significant difference in the reduction of the average 24-hour urinary incontinence frequency between groups(P<0.05); the treatment group had higher percentage of mild leakage and lower percentage of moderate leakage than control group(P<0.01). Significant differences were found between groups in the reduction amount of urine leakage measured by 1-hour pad test(P<0.01) and in the the change of ICIQ-SF scores(P<0.01) from baseline to 8 weeks
17-20 weeks
and 29-32 weeks
respectively. Conclusion Electroacupuncture can effectively relieve the symptoms of urinary incontinence in females with SUI
and is superior than pelvic floor muscle training.
