The Effect of Baduanjin on Exercise Cardiopulmonary Function and Quality of Life in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective To explore the effect of Baduanjin on exercise cardiopulmonary function
angina pectoris symptoms and quality of life as well as the safety in patients with stable coronary artery disease(SCAD). Methods Sixty SCAD patients who were admitted to the cardiovascular department of the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from November 2017 to June 2018 were recruited and randomised into treatment group and control group with 30 cases in each group. The treatment group received Baduanjin in combination with conventional treatment
while the control group was given conventional integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment alone
both for one month. The exercise cardiopulmonary function indexes including anaerobic threshold(AT)
peak exercise load
peak exercise time
oxygen uptake(VO
2
)
kilogram oxygen uptake(VO
2
/kg)
metabolic equivalent(MET)
ventilation(VE)
tidal volume(VT)
respiratory frequency(Rf)
and breathing reserve(BR)
the angina pectoris symptoms including angina pectoris severity grading and angina pectoris score
quality of life(European five-dimensional health scale
EQ-5 D)
adverse cardiovascular events and safety indicators were assessed. Results The AT level
peak exercise load
VO
2
VO
2

MET
and peak exercise time of the treatment group significantly increased after treatment(P
<
0.01)
and the AT and peak exercise load of the control group was also higher than that before treatment(P
<
0.01); more increase was seen in treatment group than in control group(P
<
0.05 or P
<
0.01). The AT and peak VE and VT of the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group after treatment(P
<
0.05 or P
<
0.01); the peak Rf was also higher(P
<
0.05) while the BR was lower(P
<
0.05). The angina pectoris severity grading
angina pectoris score
and EQ-5 D score showed improved results after treatment(P
<
0.05 or P
<
0.01) in both groups
and more improvements were seen in treatment group than in control group(P
<
0.05 or P
<
0.01). Conclusion On the basis of conventional treatment with traditional Chinese and Western medicine
adjuvant Baduanjin can further improve the exercise cardiopulmonary function of patients with SCAD
relieve the symptoms of angina pectoris and improve quality of life
