Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea based on “Brain-gut coordinating” Theory
It is believed that patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea(IBS-D) have "abnormal brain-gut interaction"
and the pathogenesis can be summarized as "imbalance of pivot of spirit"
"blockage of gastrointestinal qi" and "disturbance of shaoyang(少阳) movement". Considering the pathogenesis of IBS-D and referring to the theory of "regulating the pivot and unblocking the stomach"
the diagnosis and treatment idea of "brain-gut coordinating" are proposed
which include warming kidney
fortifying spleen and regulating pivot; nourishing heart
fortifying spleen and calming the mind; as well as soothing the liver
fortifying spleen and regulating spirit. This idea can also be used in acupuncture
moxibustion and other treatment methods. The "brain-gut coordinating" method involves treatment of multiple targets of "brain" and "gut"
which can help to alleviate patients′ mental and psychological symptoms and digestive tract discomfort simultaneously
highlighting the advantages of co-regulation of brain-gut and bringing new ideas for the treatment of IBS-D.
