A Retrospective Study on Qingfei Paidu Decoction (清肺排毒汤) Combined with Routine Treatment for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases in 124 Cases
To explore the clinical effectiveness and safety of
Qingfei Paidu Decoction
(清肺排毒汤, QPD) combined with western medicine rountine therapy in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
Methods
2
Data on confirmed cases of COVID-19 with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases who were admitted to 28 hospitals in eight provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities across the country during January 23 to March 7, 2020 were retrospectively collected. Patients were included if they had taken QPD for at least six days on the basis of routine therapy. According to the type of comorbidities, patients were classified into cardiovascular disease group and cerebrovascular disease group. The case number of clinical symptoms including cough, fever, fatigue, dry cough, anorexia and asthma before and after treatment, the resolution time of clinical symptoms, the improvement of laboratory abnormal indicators, the absorption of lung lesions, the time to negative conversion of nucleic acid test result, and adverse reactions were assessed.
Results
2
A total of 124 COVID-19 patients were included, of which 113 cases were concomitant with cardiovascular diseases and 11 were with cerebrovascular diseases. The case number of fever, cough, fatigue, dry cough and asthma significantly decreased after treatment (
P
<0.05 or
P
<0.01); the resolution time of fever was the shortest, and the medium time was 1.00 (1.00, 3.00) day. Significant changes with improvement rate over 65% were found in certain laboratory abnormal indicators, which were decreased white blood cell count, decreased lymphocyte count, increased creatine kinase, increased creatine kinase isoenzyme and increased alkaline phosphatase. The medium resolution time to negative conversion of nucleic acid test result was 8.5 (5.0, 14.0) days. The absorption rate of lung lesions was 92.1% (93/101). The condition of patients in cardiovascular disease group was similar to that of overall included patients regarding the improvement of clinical symptoms and laboratory abnormal indicators and the absorption of lung lesions; but for patients in cerebrovascular disease group, only the case number of fever significantly decreased (
P
<0.05), while there were no statistical differences in improvement of other symptoms (
P
>0.05); the absorption rate of lung lesions was 87.5%; the medium time to negative conversion of nucleic acid test result was 11.0 (9.0, 14.0) days. There were four gastrointestinal reactions in three patients, and no serious adverse events occurred.
Conclusion
2
QPD combined with routine therapy can quickly relieve the symptoms of fever, fatigue and asthma, improve laboratory abnormal indicators, and have good safety when treating COVID-19 patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases; but its effect on patients with cerebrovascular diseases needs further verification.
