Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Type 2 Diabetes Treated by Qingfei Paidu Decoction (清肺排毒汤) in Combination with Western Medicine Routine Method:A Retrospective Study of 49 Cases
QPD) in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) concomitant with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
Methods
2
Clinical data was retrospectively collected from patients confirmed with COVID-19 with T2D and admitted to 17 hospitals in eight provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities from January 24 to March 17
2020. Patients were included if they had taken QPD for at least 6 days. The clinical symptoms (fever
cough
dry cough
fatigue
anorexia
and asthma) were assessed before treatment and at day 3 and day 6 after treatment; the improvement of laboratory abnormal indicators were recorded before treatment and at day 6 after treatment; the time to negative conversion of nucleic acid test result
the duration of hospital stay
adverse reactions
and end-point outcomes were assessed.
Results
2
A total of 49 patients of COVID-19 with T2D were included. Compared to those before treatment
the number of fever
cough and fatigue were significantly reduced at day 3 and day 6 during treatment
and the difference was statistically significant (
P
<0.05). The results of lung CT images showed that 47 patients had different degrees of lung lesions before treatment
and the number decreased to 41 at day 6 during treatment
with no significant difference (
P
>0.05). Compared to those before treatment
the number of patients with elevated C-reactive protein
elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate
elevated alanine aminotransferase
elevated aspartate aminotransferase
decreased lymphocyte count
and elevated white blood cell count showed no statistically changes at day 6 during treatment (
P
>0.05). The medium time to negative conversion of nucleic acid test result was 11 (8
15) days
and the medium duration of hospital stay was 18 (14
23) days. No serious adverse events occurred during treatment. All patients were cured and discharged from hospitals.
Conclusion
2
The use of QPD in addition to conventional western medicine routine method can effectively alleviate the symptoms of fever
cough
fatigue and other symptoms and promote the negative conversion of nucleic acid test result in COVID-19 patients concomitant with T2D
with no serious adverse reactions and having preferred prognosis.
