Discussion on Correlation between Spirit-regulation in Acupuncture and Narrative Medicine
This paper discussed the relationship between spirit-regulation in acupuncture and modern narrative medicine from ancient literature and clinical application. It is considered that the theory of spirit-regulation embodies medical humanistic thoughts such as paying attention to patients' spiritual status, respecting patients' internal feelings and establishing cooperative relationship between doctors and patients. In essence, it has something in common with the three core connotations of narrative medicine, that are empathy, reflection and doctor-patient community. The process of using specific method to inspect the spirit, communicating and interacting with patients, and observing the patients' life activities and emotional spirits is a way of expression of “empathy” in acupuncture practice. The “reflection” of acupuncture practice is embodied in that the acupoints are chosen according to the characteristics of pathogenesis, the mental state of patients and the treatment feedback, and the treatment protocol is modified and optimized with the treatment result. The “doctor-patient community” is reflected in the shared decision making of treatment protocol, mutual cooperation to promote the treatment effects, and long-term emotional and spiritual support from doctors to patients after several visits. Acupuncture therapy under the guidance of spirit-regulation theory is the implementation of narrative medicine in clinical setting, and the development of narrative medicine will provide more advanced theoretical support for spirit-regulation theory.
