Literature Review of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndromes and Syndrome Elements in Children with Simple Obesity
To summarize the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes and syndrome elements of children with simple obesity.
Methods
2
The literature related to TCM syndromes in children with simple obesity were searched in CNKI, Wanfang, SinoMed and VIP databases from January 1st, 1990 to January 1st, 2021, and the data on syndromes were collected and classified into disease location elements and disease nature elements. The database was established by using Excel software. The frequency of symptoms/signs, syndromes and syndrome elements were statistically analyzed.
Results
2
A total of 31 papers were included, involving 2895 cases. There were 31 symptoms with a total frequency of 150 times, 11 tongue manifestations with 48 times, 11 pulse manifestations with 43 times. The top five symptoms of children with simple obesity were mental fatigue and lack of strength (18 times, 12.0%), stomach cavity and abdominal distention (14 times, 9.3%), bloated head and vertigo (10 times, 6.7%), heavy limbs (9 times, 6.0%), and loose stools (8 times, 5.3%); the most common tongue manifestations were greasy coating (10 times, 20.8%), white coating (9 times, 18.8%), and pale and enlarged tongue (7 times, 14.6%); the top three pulse manifestations were slippery pulse (9 times, 20.9%), deep pulse (7 times, 16.3%), and moderate pulse or string-like pulse(5 times, 11.6%). Eighteen standardized syndromes were obtained, among which spleen deficiency leading to damp encumbrance pattern (17 times, 35.4%), spleen-kidney
yang
deficiency pattern (6 times, 12.5%), spleen deficiency and stomach heat pattern (4 times, 8.3%), liver constraint and
qi
stagnation pattern (3 times, 6.3%) and stomach heat and dampness obstruction pattern (3 times, 6.3%) were most commonly seen. Moreover, six disease location elements including spleen, stomach, kidney, liver, lung, and large intestine, as well as eight disease nature elements including
qi
deficiency, dampness, phlegm, heat,
yang
deficiency,
qi
stagnation,
yin
deficiency, and blood stasis were obtained.
Conclusion
2
The disease location of simple obesity in children is mainly in spleen and stomach, closely related to liver, kidney and lung. The disease nature elements can be divided into deficiency and excess categories, of which the deficiency syndromes are mainly
qi
deficiency, accompanied by
yang
deficiency and
yin
deficiency, while excess pathogenic factors are mainly phlegm, dampness and heat, with
qi
stagnation and blood stasis.
