The Development Strategy and Value of Patient Version of Guidelines in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Patient version of guidelines (PVGs) are produced to meet the health needs of patients and the public. They are formulated from the health issues of interest to the target population, and provide recommendations in usable format for the public by defining clinical questions, searching the best available evidence, taking full considerations of the values and preferences of the target population, and balancing between benefits and harms. PVGs are not only educational tools but also a carrier for the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) culture. The introduction of PVGs into TCM evidence-based guidelines meets the health needs of diagnosis and treatment technology, and promotes the development and improvement of modern TCM. It is suggested to develop PVGs with TCM specific features as well as humanities by learning from international high-quality development methods of PVGs, taking consideration of China's national condition, and analyzing the specific characteristics and advantages of TCM in “preventing disease before it arises”. In the initial stage, it is important to clarify the dominant area of TCM and standardize the methodology of PVGs. This paper provides reference for future development of PVGs in TCM by discussing the necessity of PVGs in TCM and describing the focus area of future exploration and the related strategy.
