Brief History of Study on the Five Phases Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine
By summarizing the related researches in the past 100 years it is pointed that the primary issue of the five phases is its origin. The origin of the five phases has not yet been unified, however, the theory of the five phases from philosophy into traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) undoubtedly provides different cognitive materials for the cross-domain mapping of the five phases. Regarding the methodology used in the researches about the five phases, traditional researches mainly use “object and
xiang
analogy” to clarify the characteristics of the five phases by using ana-logy method and mathematical logical tools. However, due to the defect of the research methodology, mainstream researches are caught in a vortex of debating the pros and cons of the five elements. In describing the relationship between the five phases, the embodied cognitive science takes a crossed perspective of language, logic, psychology, cognition and others, and points out the family similarity nature of the five phases. It tries to verify the specific thinking of the five phases for reasoning through neuroscience, giving a new meaning of the five phases. Simultaneously, philosophy of science indicates the kernel of the general connection of the five phases, and informal logic shows the domain dependence during the reasoning process. The hard exploration of the five phases in the past 100 years indicate that new theory of the five phases has been generated as the new research tools come out, and the continuous interpretation and reconstruction makes the theory of the five phases become mature.
