Characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndromes in Multiple System Atrophy and Its Correlation with the Level of Hemoglobin-binding α-synuclein
To explore the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome characteristics of multiple system atrophy (MSA) and its correlation with the level of hemoglobin-binding α-synuclein (Hb-α-syn) in erythrocytes.
Methods
2
The MSA patients were collected and set as the MSA group, and the healthy subjects matched with gender and age were selected as the control group, with 149 cases in each group. TCM syndrome score and the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS) score were assessed, and the levels of Hb-α-syn in erythrocytes of the peripheral blood were detected. Spearman correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between the score of the main TCM syndrome and the age of onset, course of disease, and UMSARS score in MSA patients, as well as the correlation between Hb-α-syn level and the age of onset, course of disease, UMSARS score, and TCM syndrome score.
Results
2
The average level of Hb-α-syn in erythrocytes of MSA group was 194.01±58.27 μg/ml, significantly higher than 143.12±44.01 μg/ml of the control group (
P
<0.01). Among the 143 MSA patients whose TCM syndrome information were collected, there were 140 cases of kidney deficiency as the main syndrome including 94 cases of kidney-
qi
deficiency, 33 cases of kidney-
yang
deficiency, and 13 cases of kidney-
yin
deficiency; in terms of the combined syndrome, there were 56 cases of phlegm-dampness syndrome and 54 cases of blood stasis syndrome. The average TCM syndrome score of the 140 patients with the main syndrome of kidney deficiency was 23.02±6.33, while that of phlegm-dampness syndrome and blood stasis syndrome was 5.99±3.45 and 4.92±2.35, respectively. The average UMSARS total score of the 149 MSA patients was 43.95±16.71. The main syndrome score of kidney deficiency was positively correlated with the course of disease and the total score of UMSARS (
P
<0.01), while the level of Hb-α-syn had no significant correlation with the age of onset, course of disease, UMSARS score, and TCM syndrome score (
P
>0.05).
Conclusion
2
The kidney
qi
deficiency syndrome is most commonly seen in MSA patients, and the level of Hb-α-syn in MSA patients is significantly higher than that of healthy people. However, the correlation between TCM syndromes and the Hb-α-syn level has not yet been determined.
