Analyzing the Source of the Theory of “The Pulse of Spirit”
“The pulse of spirit” is one of the important ideas of pulse diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which can be traced back to LI Gao, and was first clearly proposed by LI Yanwen. Its connotation has been enriched and improved through the hardwork of the later physicians. By summarizing the theoretical origin of “pulse of spirit”, and further clarifying its theoretical connotation, it is considered that the pulse manifestation is mainly characterized by three aspects, including forceful pulse, gentle pulse manifestation, and regular pulse rhythm. This paper differentiated and analyzed the theoretical contention of the “pulse of spirit” among the physicians of all ages, and discussed the similarities and differences between the “pulse of spirit”, the “pulse of the stomach
qi
” and the “pulse with the root”, so as to clarify its value in guiding the clinical practice.
