Analysis of Diabetes Mellitus-related TCM Research Projects Funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China from 2017 to 2021
To analyze the diabetes mellitus (DM)-related traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) research projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) from 2017 to 2021, and to explore the research status and development trend of TCM interventions for DM.
Methods
2
The NSFC database, MedSci, and the Scientific Research Z Library were searched to obtain the DM-related projects funded by NSFC from 2017 to 2021. And the information including the project funding amount, Chinese keywords, medication and treatment principle, related mechanisms and research objects were collected for statistical analysis.
Results
2
In recent five years, NSFC has funded a total of 1546 DM-related projects, among which 324 projects were involved with TCM. The analysis of medication and treatment principles showed that many projects have explored the anti-diabetes mechanism of
Buyang Huanwu Decoction
(补阳还五汤) and
Tangshen Formula
(糖肾方). Analysis of keywords in Chinese (English) and the research objects showed that type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications were mostly studied, and the most common ones were diabetic nephropathy (104 projects), diabetic ulcer wound healing (17 projects), diabetic intestinal microbiota diseases (15 projects), diabetic peripheral neuropathy (13 projects), diabetic cardiomyopathy (11 projects), and diabetic encephalopathy (11 projects). In addition, autophagy pathway, inflammatory pathway, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial pathway, gut microbiota, oxidative stress and exosome pathway were most commonly used to explore the mechanism of TCM in the prevention and treatment of DM and its complications.
Conclusion
2
In the past five years, most of the DM-related TCM projects funded by NSFC have been designed to explore the mechanism of clinically effective TCM compounds in intervening DM and its complications. The cross-integration of multi-disciplines and multi-technologies will also be beneficial to promoting the basic and clinical researches about TCM in the management of DM.
