Re-understanding of Immunity via Combined View of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine:A Discussion Based on Syndrome Differentiation and Immune State
Immunity plays an important role in resisting the invasion of exogenous pathogens and maintaining homeostasis in the internal environment. Although there are differences in the perspectives and thinking modes of understanding immunity between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine (WM), the complexity and systematicness of immunity function have been frequently debated by both of the medical systems. We analyzed the understanding and practice of immunity and their relationship in different stages of the development of TCM and WM, and traced back the treatment concept and its evolution in dealing with immunological diseases in both medical systems, so as to summarize advantages and pathways for the integrated TCM and WM in treating immunological diseases. We further re-understood the essence of syndrome differentiation and treatment in TCM from the perspective of systems science, and proposed the new concept of “immune state” as the innovative beginning to study TCM immunology by combining with the basic ideas and methods of systems biology. It is pointed out that “immune-state based treatment” may be a new strategy in diagnosing and treating immunological diseases by integrated TCM and WM, as well as a new research field in TCM immunology. Therefore, under this new perspective, TCM immunology will serve to bridge TCM and WM for future basic and clinical researches.
