Feasibility of Eye Movement Measures in Chinese Medicine Syndrome Differentiation of Alzheimer's Disease
This paper summarized the physiological and pathological relationship between the eye and the brain from three aspects including the material basis, function, and meridians-collaterals, by taking the “eye-brain correlation” in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as the starting point. The onset of Alzheimer disease (AD) is closely related to the abnormal function of the eye and the brain. The root of the disease is kidney essence insufficiency with essence desertion, there is brain decline and glazed eyes. The disease location of AD is at brain, and there is brain damage, mental disorder, and abnormal vision. Brian collaterals damage exists throughout the whole process of AD, which can cause eye collaterals damage. Based on the theory mentioned above, this paper puts forward that eye movement measures can be used for syndrome differentiation and diagnosis of AD. Moreover, its feasibility has been discussed by summarizing the current research situation of the usage of eye movement measures in TCM syndrome differentiation and diagnosis of AD, and by discussing the advantages in moving the AD diagnosis window forward, reflecting the TCM syndrome, and promoting the objectification of TCM diagnosis and effect evaluation.
