Theory and Application of “Relaxation and Calmness” Rehabilitation Concept in Dealing with Post-stroke Spasticity
Spasticity is one of the unfavorable rehabilitation factors of limb function in stroke patients with hemiplegia, meanwhile, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has unique advantages in treating post-stroke spasticity (PSS). The concept of “relaxation and calmness” for stroke takes “relaxation” and “calmness” as the guiding ideology and specific method for the rehabilitation of PSS. Developed from this concept, the theory of “unblocking and harmony between body constituents and function” is formed, taking the TCM theory of the visceral manifestation as the basis, and the “unblocking” as the principle, so as to unblock the

(脏腑) organs in the interior, and connecting the limbs and orifices in the exterior, and thus promote the recovery of the limb functions. Simultaneously, by integrating the treatment object, purpose, method and curative effect as a whole, a set of post-stroke spasticity rehabilitation program that uniting Chinese materia medica, acupuncture, Tui na and other TCM therapies has been continuously improved and finally formed over the years. The concept of “relaxation and calmness” has enriched the connotation of TCM rehabilitation theory and provided new ideas or methods for clinical treatment of PSS.
