Immediate Analgesic Effect of Nasal Plugging Method Based on Channel Pattern Differentiation in the Treatment of Acute Migraine Attack: A Randomized Controlled Trial
To explore immediate analgesic effect and safety of nasal plugging method based on channel pattern differentiation in treatment of acute migraine attack. Metheds Totally 186 migraine patients were randomly divided into treatment group and control group with 93 cases in each group, and then classified into four types of headache including Jueyin (厥阴), Shaoyang (少阳), Taiyang (太阳) and Yangming (阳明) headache based on the channel pattern differentiation. The treatment group was given 0.2 g of corresponding nasal plugging powder based on the channel pattern in to the external nasal passage for 15 minutes, while the control group was given 0.3 g of ibuprofen sustained-release capsule orally. Both groups were given medication once at the time of acute attack of headache. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score before treatment, 0.5 and 2 hours after treatment, concomitant symptom scores before treatment, 0.5 hours after treatment were compared between groups, as well as the taking-effect time of drugs after treatment and the recurrence rate within 24 hours in patients with headache relief.
Results
2
The 0.5 h- and 2 h-VAS scores after treatment at overall level and of different headache type, as well as the 0.5 h-concomitant symptom score after treatment at overall level and of Shaoyang, Taiyang and Yangming headache significantly decreased in both groups compared to those before treatment; the 2 h-VAS score at overall level and of all types of headache were significantly lower than 0.5 h-VAS scores after treatment in both groups; the 2 h-VAS score of Taiyang headache after treatment was significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group (
P
<0.05 or
P
<0.01). Seventy-five patients in the treatment group and 83 patients in the control group had headache relief. Except for Taiyang headache, other pattern headache in the treatment group took effect faster than in the control group (
P
<0.05). There was no significant difference in recurrence rate within 24 hours between the treatment group (34.67%) and control group (30.12%) of patients with headache relief (
P
>0.05). There were no obvious adverse reactions in both groups.
Conclusion
2
The nasal plugging method based on channel pattern differentiation can significantly alleviate the headache degree and accompanying symptoms during acute migraine attack, taking effect quickly and being safe.
