Influence of Different Onset Side of Motor Symptoms on the Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Elements and Motor Function in Patients with Parkinson's Disease
To investigate the differences in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome elements and motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with different onset side of motor symptoms, and to provide reference for the clinical treatment.
Methods
2
A total of 156 PD patients with unilateral onset were included, involving 78 cases each in the left-sided onset group (L-PD) and the right-sided onset group (R-PD). The general condition was collected, and the PD phenomenon scale (PD-PES) was used to determine the TCM syndrome elements. The second and third parts of the PD comprehensive rating scale (UPDRS-Ⅱ and UPDRS-Ⅲ) were used, and the muscle tone detector was performed to detect the muscle tension including area under the curve (AUC) of upper and lower limbs. The 10-meter walk test (10MWT), step length and the “walk-stand” timed up-and-go test (TUGT) were used to assess the motor function.
Results
2
The frequency of syndrome elements blood stasis and yang hyperactivity was 75 (96.2%) and 15 (19.2%), respectively, and the blood stasis syndrome element score was 14,0 (10.0, 16.0) in the L-PD group, higher than 59 (75.6%), 3 (3.8%), and 11.0 (7.0, 14.0) in the R-PD group. The frequency of
qi
deficiency and phlegm syndrome elements and
qi
deficiency syndrome element score in the R-PD group were 55 (70.5%), 42 (53.8%) and 8.4 (6.0, 13.1), respectively, significantly higher than 42 (53.8%), 24 (30.7%) and 7.4 (4.7, 12.3) in the L-PD group (
P
<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in other syndrome elements between groups (
P
>0.05). The UPDRS-Ⅲ score and TUGT were significantly higher in the L-PD group than in the R-PD group [27.5 (18.0, 38.0)
vs
. 25.0 (15.0, 34.0); 17.5 (13.0, 20.0)
svs
. 15.0 (13.0,18.0)], and the lower extremity AUC was higher in the R-PD group (14.2±2.8
vs
. 13.0±3.4) (
P
<0.05). The differences were not statistically significant when comparing the UPDRS-Ⅱ scores, upper extremity AUC, 10MWT, and step length between groups (
P
>0.05).
Conclusion
2
Left-side onset PD patients are more likely to have blood stasis and yang hyperactivity syndrome elements, while right-side onset PD pateints are prone to
qi
deficiency and phlegm turbidity syndrome elements, and left-side onset patients have more severe motor disorders.
