The Connotation of Sanjiao System in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine and Its Roles in Zang-Fu Organs,Qi and Blood, and Emotions
The paper systematically reviewed the understandings of physicians in successive dynasties regarding the form and nature of
Sanjiao
, and proposed a new concept of "
sanjiao
system". It is believed that the composition of
sanjiao
system is "heart-pericardium-
sanjiao
-five
zang
and six
fu
organs". With the heart as the motive force, the pericardium as the conduction link, and the
sanjiao
as the transportation and distribution channel, this system serves as a functional network that realizes the dynamic allocation as well as the information communication of
qi
, blood and essential nutrients among the five
zang
and six
fu
organs, which constitutes a core regulatory system for maintaining homeostasis of the internal environment. Its connotation in modern medicine may be a composite of the two systems: the visceral nervous system and the gut-brain axis. Its functions include coordinating the circulation of
qi
and blood throughout the body, regulating the transportation and transformation functions of the five
zang
and six
fu
organs; it may also participate in the generation and restriction of the five phases, regulate mental and emotional activities; additionally, it may affect the normal function of midnight-noon ebb-flow, and coordinate the liver, gallbladder and lung to maintain the physiological sleep rhythm.
