Ensuring and Re-evaluation the Definitive Efficacy of Protected Traditional Chinese Medicinal Products under the Framework of the Regulations on the Protection of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Varieties
Protected traditional Chinese medicinal products (referred to as "protected TCM products") are those selected under the
Regulations on the Protection of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Varieties
for their distinctive therapeutic effects and superior quality, representing a synthesis of traditional medicine and modern medicine. Owing to profound differences between the theoretical systems of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine, the development of protected TCM products currently faces challenges such as a limited number of protected varieties, increasing pressure for renewal upon expiration, and unclear clinical positioning, which have in turn led to questions regarding the definitiveness of their clinical efficacy. In response, this paper proposes measures including integrating the theoretical strengths of TCM and western medicine to establish efficacy evaluation methods consistent with the characteristics of TCM, conducting post-marketing re-evaluations based on real-world data, and further clarifying the clinical positioning of these products by relying on a "three-integration" evidence-based review system. These approaches aim to provide references for ensuring the definiti
ve efficacy of protected TCM products and for carrying out efficacy re-evaluation studies, thereby offering a scientific basis for their sustainable development.
