Abstract
The experiment was carried out on malemice(20-24g).The animals were dividedinto two groups
i.e.moxa cauterized(gro-up A)and control(group B).The resultsshowed that the rate of clearance of carbonparticles from the blood in group A (10 mi-ce)was quite different from that of groupB(12 mice). The carbon particles in group A were cleared very rapidly from the bloodin 10-20 minutes after injection
and almostdisappeared completely in 40 minutes afterinjection
while the blood carbon concentra-tion in group B was still at a higher level. The phagocytic indices(K)in groups A andB were 0.051±0.014 and 0.019±0.008 res-pectively.The difference between them wasstatistically significant(P<0.01).The distribution of carbon in liver andspleen of mice was studied quantitatively. In group A (8 mice)
considerable quantitiesof carbon were accumulated in the liver
whereas only traces were found in thespleen in both groups. In group A
the meancarbon particles in the liver was 2.72±0.49mg(68.0% recovered)
while in the spleenwas 0.048±0.018mg(1.2% recovered).Ingroup B(8 mice)
the mean carbon particlesin the liver was 1.77±0.66mg(44.24% re-covered)and 0.019±0.01mg(0.47% recovered)in the spleen. Therefore
the function of theliver macrophages was more significantly ac-tivated in moxa group than that of the nor-mal control animals. The peritoneal phago-cytic percentages of the two groups were foundto be 42.2±5.6% and 23.8±7.3%
andthe phagocytic indices were 0.61±0.11 and0.38±0.12 respectively. This indicated thatthe peritoneal phagocytes of the animalswere more activated in group A(P<0.01).
