Objective:To observe effects of acupuncture combined with oral administration of Zhenren Yizhibao on intelligence quotient(IQ) and electroencephalogram(EEG) and their correlativity in children of mongolism.Methods:Fifty-one children of mongolism were randomly divided into a treatment group(n=31) treated with acupuncture combined with medicine
and a control group(n=20) with no treatment.IQ of the children was determined with Wei’s Intelligence Scale and EEG was examined before and after treatment. Results:After treatment
IQ level and EEG significantly improved in the treatment group(P<0.01)
which were superior to those in the control group(P<0.01) and there was correlativity between IQ and EEG.Conclusion:Acupuncture combined with medicine can significantly increase IQ level
and improvement of abnormal cerebral function is possibly one of the important mechanisms of acupuncture combined with medicine increasing IQ in children of mongonism.
