Objective To study the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with Ligustrazine for vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) by transcranial doppler (TCD). Methods Totally 86 VBI patients including 56 cases of low-velocity flow type (LVFT) and 30 cases of high-velocity flow type (HVFT) were randomly divided into Ligustrazine group of 26 LVFT and 14 HVFT patients and acupuncture with Ligustrazine group of 30 LVFT and 16 HVFT patients. After 10 days’ treatment
the blood flow rate (BFR) of vertebral artery (VA) and basilar artery (BA) in systolic phase and therapeutic effect were observed by TCD. Results In acupuncture with Ligustrazine group
the total effective rates of LVFT and HVFT were 93.3% and 88.5% respectively; BFR of VA and BA increased in LVFT patients
while decreased in HVFT patients significantly after treatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Conclusion As compared with application of Ligustrazine merely
the combination of acupuncture has better therapeutic effect and dual-directional regulation on blood flow of VA and BA.
