Objective To observe the effect of Xiongfu Powder [Powder including Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Preparata)] on the mice models with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) induced by spleen deficiency. Methods The DBA mice were selected as the experimental animals. The models of collagen induced arthritis (CIA) were made by feeding Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) to induce diarrhea and irregular feeding to cause spleen deficiency. They were treated by Xiongfu Powder and Tripterygium Wilfordii polyglyco-sidium (TWP). The body weight
degree of swelling and pathological changes of joints were observed. The quantity changes of collagen antibody Ⅱ (CⅡ)
tumor necrosis factor -α (TNF-α)
and interferon -γ (IFN-γ) were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results In the Bi syndrome group and Bi syndrome induced by spleen deficiency group
the body weight was lowered
the joint swelling became worse
the pathological changes of knee and ankle joints showed obviously
TNF -α and IFN-γ increased
CⅡ increased
especially in the Bi syndrome induced by spleen deficiency group
compared with the Bi syndrome group
the difference was significant (P<0.05). Xiongfu Powder could relieve the above-mentioned pathological changes obviously. Conclusion This is one of the ideal animal models for studying Bi syndrome
rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Xiongfu Powder has an obvious therapeutic effect for this model.
