Objective To study the clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture on perennial allergic rhinitis(PAR)and its mechanism. Methods The 214 PAR patients were randomized into two groups with 107 in each.Acupuncture group was treated with the principle of strengthening the spleen and lung
eliminating the pathogenic wind
and obstructing the nose by puncturing Zusanli(ST 36)
Yingxiang(LI 20)
Yintang(EX-HN3)
and Hegu(LI 4)
etc.The herbal group was given Xinqin Granule. After 24 days
the therapeutic effect was evaluated and 30 cases taken randomly from two groups were examined with their IL-4
IFN-γ
IL-4/IFN-γ
IgE
and the percentage of eosinophils in the nasal secretion tested for comparison. Results As for the short-term clinical therapeutic effect
the total effective rate was 87.9% in the acupuncture group and 74.8% in the herbal group. As for the long-term effect
the total effective rate was 80% in the acupuncture group and 55% in the herbal group. The study on the mechanism showed that acupuncture could balance IL-4/IFN-γ
inhibit the level of serum IgE
and decrease the percentage of eosinophils in the nasal secretion through regulating the level of IL-4 and IFN-γ.Conclusion Acupuncture is significant in treating PAR.
