Objective To study the difference of activated cerebral functional areas through positron emission tomography (PET) images after true and sham needling in Waiguan (TE5). Methods Eighteen healthy volunteers were randomly divided into control
true needling and "sham" needling groups. The 18F-FDG was used as developer and PET was used for scanning the brain to obtain the images for analysis. Results Compared with the control group

22 and 41 in sham needling group showed obvious activation. Compared with sham needling group
the marked activated points were found in the areas of BA13
42 and cerebellum in true needling group. Conclusion Different activated areas were found in true and sham needling groups. The functions controlled by the cerebral areas acted in the true needling group were related closely to the therapeutic effect of Waiguan (TE5).
