Objective To study the effect and safety of Modified Huanglian Jiedu Decoction（Detoxicant Coptis Decoction） combined with clozapine in the treatment of schizophrenia with excitationt and agitation.Methods Totally 160 inpatients were divided into two groups.The study group

was treated with Modified Huanglian Jiedu Decoction combined with clozapine

and the control group

80 cases

treated with clozapine only.The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale（BPRS） and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale（TESS） were used to evaluate the effect and safety.Results The effective rate of study group and control group was 82.5% and 72.5% respectively at the end of the second week of treatment

the study group being better than the control group（P<0.05）.The agitation factors in BPRS of both groups at 72h

one week and two weeks after treatment were significantly decreased compared with those before treatment

and the study group was supperior to the control group（P<0.05 or P<0.01）.The side effect in the study group was less than that in the control group.Conclusion Modified Huanglian Jiedu Decoction is effective for schizophrenia.The effect of Chinese medicine combined with clozapine is better than western medicine only with less side effect.
