Objective To explore the effect of acupuncture on the rehabilitation of nervous functions of different type of hemiplegia patients with cerebral infarction based on the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP). Methods A randomized and multi-central clinical trial was conducted. According to OCSP
the patients were divided into the lacunar cerebral infarction (LACI) group
total anterior circulation infarction (TACI) group
partial anterior circulation infarction (PACI) group
and posterior circulation infarction (POCI) group
and each group was randomized again into treatment group and control group. Acupuncture was applied to Baihui (GV20)
Sanyinjiao (SP6)
Taixi (KI 3)
Xuehai (SP10)
Fenglong (SP40)
Zusanli (ST36) and the symptomatic points for the treatment group
and the control group was given sham-acupuncture at the same points. The course of treatment was 3 months. Both groups were assessed with the STREA at the time of enrollment and at the end of the 1st
3rd
6th
and 12th month of treatment respectively. Results There was no significant difference between treatment and control group of LACI and TACI type (P>0.05)
however
there was significant difference between treatment and control group of PACI and POCI type at the end of the 3rd and12th month (P<0.05). Conclusion The effect of acupuncture on the different nervous impairments of cerebral infarction is different. It promotes significantly the rehabilitation of nervous functions of PACI and POCI patients.
