Objective To investigate the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on bone metabolism in male osteoporosis patients. Methods Fifty-five male cases of osteoporosis were randomized into control group (25 cases) and treatment group (30 cases). The control group was administered Alendronate sodium for oral taking
the treatment group was treated by acupuncture and moxibustion additionally. Both groups were treated for 6 months in succession and the effect on symptom scores and bone metablism were compared. Results After treatment
the symptom scores of both groups were all significantly lowered (P<0.01)
and the decrease in the treatment group was more significant than that in the control group (P<0.01). The levels of testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) of both groups were without statistical difference as compared with those before treatment (P>0.05)
but alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
osteocalcin (OC)
parathyrin (PTH)
and pyridinoline (PYD)/urine creatinine (Cr) were all significantly decreased (P<0.01). The between-group comparison showed that the treatment group was more significant in the improvement in PYD/Cr than the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture and moxibusiton can improve symptom and bone metablism of male osteoporosis patients. The effect of acupuncture and moxibustion in combination with western medicine is more effective than simple drug therapy.
