Objective To observe the effect of Huoxue Lishui Formula（formula for activating blood and dissolving water） combined with 532 Laser therapy on diabetic macular edema（DME）.Methods Totally 90 patients （147 eyes） with diabetic macular edema were randomized into Chinese medicine group（30 cases

47 eyes）

laser photocoagulation group（30 cases

49 eyes）

and integrated group（Chinese medicine combined with laser photocoagulation

30 cases

51 eyes）.All groups were treated for 30 days.The best corrected visual acuity and changes in retinal thickness determined by optic coherence tomography（OCT） were observed 3 and 6 months after treatment.Results Six months after treatment

the total effective rate of the integrated group（74.51%） was higher than that of the Chinese medicine group（51.06%） and the laser photocoagulation group（61.23%）

and the difference was significant（P<0.05）.The visual acuity of the Chinese medicine group 3 months after treatment was improved than before treatment（P<0.05）

but there was no improvement 6 months after treatment than before treatment（P>0.05）.The visual acuity of the laser photocoagulation group and integrated group 3 and 6 months after treatment was improved than before treatment（P<0.05）.No significant decrease of the retinal thickness was found in the Chinese medicine group 3 and 6 months after treatment（P>0.05）.The retinal thickness of the laser photocoagulation group and integrated group was significantly decreased 3 and 6 months after treatment compared with that before treatment（P<0.05）.In visual acuity and retinal thickness

the laser photocoagulation group and integrated group had significant difference compared with the Chinese medicine group 3 and 6 months after treatment（P<0.05）.The integrated group had significant difference compared with the laser photocoagulation group 3 and 6 months after treatment（P<0.05）.Conclusion Huoxue Lishui Formula combined with 532 Laser therapy is effective on DME

and the effect is better than single laser photocoagulation or Chinese medicine.
