Objective To study the influence of modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction (Decoction invigorating yang for recuperation) on oxidation stress mechanism and neurological functions of the patients with acute cerebral infarction. Methods Eighty cases of acute cerebral infarction were randomized into the treatment group and control group with 40 in each. The control group received the conventional western medicine treatment
including anticoagulation
fibrous degradation
antiplatelet gel
and volume expansion
etc.The treatment group received modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction in addition to the conventional treatment. The course of treatment was 14 days for both groups. Before and after the treatment
the patients were scored with National Institutes of Health stroke scale(NIHSS) and their activity of daily living(ADL) was evaluated with Barthel index. And the superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde(MDA) were detected to observe the changes in contents. Results After treatment
the NIHSS scores
Barthel index
and the contents of SOD and MDA of both groups were statistically different from those of before treatment(P<0.05)
and the improvement of all indices of the treatment group was more than that of the control group. There was statistical difference after treatment in both groups(P<0.05).Conclusion Modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction is effectively improving the neurological functions of the patients with acute cerebral infarction
and lowering the oxidation stress is possibly one of its functional mechanisms.
